Easy Ways to Refresh Your Home

Design Tips

Happy New Year!

I think 2020 showed us how important “home” really is to us. It became a haven in ways we have never experienced. As much as I desire to spend time with friends and family, eat at my favorite restaurants and travel, I have been so thankful to have a home that creates a sense of peace and refuge.

Usually with the new year comes the desire to reset and have a fresh start. I tend to want to get organized and change things around a bit. Let’s face it- thinking about possibilities for my house definitely seems more fun than workout and diet resolutions!

After I put away my Christmas decor, my rooms feel a little bare without all the holiday touches. It’s the perfect time to try something new. Here are some easy ways to spice up your space!

ADD POP OF COLOR

Brighter warm colors are on trend for 2021. Most of us have been living in the world of neutrals for awhile. The great thing about having a neutral foundation is that it is super easy to add just about any color to what you already have to brighten things up. I am loving the deep rich greens and darker blues right now. Look around for a piece of furniture you might give a fresh coat of paint. A dresser, side table, or even a headboard would be fun to experiment with. Or perhaps you are ready for some color on the walls.

Wallpaper is making a comeback but I’ll be honest, I still remember the frustration of trying to remove old wallpaper with my fingernails for hours and hours. I like it for small unique spaces like the back of bookshelves or a powder room. Peel and stick wallpaper is available for a removable option.

TOSS IN SOME THROW PILLOWS

Pillows are one of the easiest ways to refresh your space and express your personality. There are so many fun patterns and textures available. I recommend larger pillows for your sofa. If you are buying pillows covers, choose inserts slightly larger than the covers for a full look and feel. Floor pillows are cozy by the fireplace for extra seating.

CHANGE OUT YOUR BEDDING

While the weather in January won’t win any awards, it’s a great reason to invest in some new bedding. A velvet duvet cover or a fluffy goose down comforter will keep you warm at night. You may have an extra cozy blanket that you could use as a bedspread or simply toss on the corner of the bed for an added touch.

TRY A NEW FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT

Try a new configuration for your furniture pieces or swap out some items from one room to another. Lamps, side tables, and chairs are easy to mix and match. If you have more than one area rug, consider switching them around.

ADD MORE LIGHT

I love the glow of Christmas lights and candles. I probably miss that the most after our decorations are packed away. Having a variety of lights is the best way to diffuse light through your space. Table and floor lamps are great for reading. Wall sconces can highlight artwork and small lamps placed on bookshelves brighten up any dark spots. I’m a big believer in dimmer switches for all overhead lighting so you can create the desired atmosphere. Also, one tip I love for adding light to a space is to use mirrors. Adding mirrors that reflect outdoor light is like adding another window in your room.

CREATE NEW ACCESSORY DISPLAYS AND ADD PLANTS

Add a few new items to update your space. In the photo above, the texture of the blankets, basket, and rug add warmth and interest. Plants are always a good idea!

I hope these tips will inspire you to try some new things as you begin 2021! I’d love to see photos of your refreshed spaces.
